THE PIPE LINE IN THE DOMAIN.

CE, EBID'S SPORTING OFFEE. At the B'orough Council meeting last night, when the call , came for "anyother business," Cr. Beid said he believed it was the intention of the Council to 'take up l the pipes in the Domain that had been used for the recent demonstration. He would like to ask why?

Cr. Wrightson said when the application came before the Council to have the pipes laid it was; understood they were to be laid, for, demonstration

purposes;..; and. when they had served ithat;' purpose they were to. bo removed. -IJhese pipes, were urgently required for the pump. That is the..reason for .their being taken up., He could see no use in leaving them in the Eeereation as there was little prospect* of another demonstration being held'here' for years. ' ''Cr, Eeid said the laying down of. the pipes cost about £2O 10s, and he could not see much sense in removing them. They were useful for the brigade to practice on, and their presence on the ground would enable any sports gathering;. held . in: the Eecreation Grounds to put on. brigade events, for which they would probably get teams from Palmcrston North to Taumarunui to compete in. Cr. Wrightson still adhered to his opinion.. a

Cr. Champion agreed with Cr. Eeid. It was neeessary to keep the Fire Brigade efficient, and this pipe line would materially tend in that direction.

Cr. Wrightson said sports had been held without these pipes. There was another line just inside the gate that would in his opinion answer the purpose.

Cr. Eeid: Yes, and with poor success Cr. Wrightson said these pipes were urgently needed for the purpose he had mentioned. The price of pipes had enormously appreciated, and he considered it an absolute waste of money to allow £4O or £SO to lay rotting in the ground. Cr. Eeid moved that the pipes be left in the grounds, Cr. Champion seconded the motion, which on being put to the meeting was lost on the casting vote of the Mayor.

•Cr. Eeid said if the Council was so hard up that they could not afford to retain the pipe line, he would undertake to raise the money necessary from the Brigade's funds or from other sources to pay for these pipes. However, there was no rejoinder from Councillors, and the pipes will have to come up.
