Crs., Wrightson, Champion, Dashwoou, Turnbull, and R e * A reply was receded from the Act-ing-Prime Minister with reference tothe internment or enemy aliens in the Dominion, stating that to carry out Council's resolution would proDably lead to retaliation, and was not generuliy desirable. —Letter received. ~ ■ ../.-^^ A letter was read from the. Unde- _,,.., Secretary for Internal Affairs with ~," reference to the storage of oxygen and ammonia, which were classified as dangerous goods, and stating that the location should be disclosed to fire

brigades. It was decided that all persons within the borough using these goods be required to take, out a license. An application was received from. Mr. W. H. Fookes to erect a swinging sign-board under the verandah of the premises in Main Street.

Cr. Wrightson moved that permission be not granted to anyone. He was altogether opposed to the erection of signboards unless they were lOtteet above-the footpath. Several signs already erected had been done so without authority. He considered these signboards -were altogether obectionable. *>

His Worship said, personally, he would be pleased if there was not a single scignboard in the town. They gave a most unsightly appearance to any town.

After some discussion Cr Wrightson sdid he would like to go further and amend his motion to read "that permission be not granted to Mr. Fookes, and that all signboards under verandahs be removed." The Mayor seconded the motion to enable discussion to be held on the question.

Cr. Turnbull said he could not support th# motion in its present form. He agreed that signboards should be 10ft above the footpaths.

A perusal of the by-laws dealing with the subject disclosed that, if!. ■ signboards were erected they should., be 10ft clear above the footpath, and that the Council had power to veto this erection under any circumstances.
