HOCKEY.

YSsterdaJ afternoon the Ladies’ Hula Hockey Club were called to again defend the Hintz Challenge Cup against the Old Girls’ Club, and a resulted. From the onset until the call of half-time the game was very fast and fairly eyen, the Old Girls if any, having IMh' best of the game, keeping the Huias mostly on the defence, and half-time was called with no score on either side. After resuming from half-time the Huias seemed to . liven up, and mader thsr, game mors, willing. After playlrhad heen going about 10 minutes A. iCamps bell, front a lucky hit managed tbj.get, the ball into the net. Huia 1, Old Girls nil. Unfortunately, just before the score was made, Miss Gordon had to retire owing to twisting her knee, and the Old Girls had to finish the match a player short. However, it was evident that with Miss Gordon going off and the team tiring that they would be up against it before the finish, and such proved to be the case, as the Huias practically had the Old Girls on the defence throughout the spell. When play had gone about 20 minutes Huias were attacking, and Miss' C. Donovan scored. Huias 2, Old Girls nil. On play resuming the Old Girls’ made a strenuous effort to score, but the defence of the Huias proved too solid. Play then went from the Huia’s 25 to mid-field, when A. Campbell took the ball down field and centred to C. Donovan, who scored. Huias 3, Old Girls nil. Shortly after time was called. Messrs Harris and .Wilson gave every satisfaction as referees. NOTES BY ONLOOKER. It is pleasing to note the interest the public are now taking in hockey, quite a number rolling up to witness the game yesterday, and all voted the game fast and interesting. Probably a few remarks on the players will not he amiss, and should help the game along. Undoubtedly condition told with the Old Girls in the second spell, and more training would materially assist them. The Huia’s team proved the better on the day and the' following is my comment on the players:— I. Treadwell as full-back was prominent, and saved her team whenever called on to do so. D. Bray, as back, was a tower of strength, and throughout played brilliantly, ably assisted by M, Siddells. C. Donovan (captain) again showed up, and is probably one of the most consistent players taking the season. A. Campbell, on the vring, v was at times prominent, as was E. Sinclair (centre half). B. Hall is not aggressive enough at half. M. Mullins is . too much inclined ,to be speculative, but has the makings of a good player if she would attempt to stop the ball before trying to hit it, E. Kilkolly requires to put more ginger into her play, and more hard-hit-ting. G. Hihherd shows improvement, and should make a useful player. N. Laurenson, although playing a good, solid game, did not show up to her usual form. The Huia team as a pack could do with more combination, the forwards at times failing to back up the wings and centre forwards. For the Old Girls, R. Brooky, as goalkeeper, is hardly quick enough at getting in her hit. E. McAuliffe at fullback, played in her usual brilliant style, saving her side continually, and was ably assisted by G. Gordon, who shows up better in that position than as goal-keeper, and was much missed by her side on having to retire on account of twisting her knee. B. Richards at half played a good solid game. C. McLaughlan could do with more practice. M. Wapp is not aggressive enough in trying to get or retain the hall. E. Donovan is not up to her usual form and was inclined to get offside. M. Leahy played a good solid game, condition. L. Jones played a good heady game, and at times was brilliant. D. Leahy is undoubtedly one of the best players in Taihape, hut her efforts failed through lack of support. D. iSwenson is a good player, but inclined to be rash and frequently gave sticks. From the players now available a good Rep. team should be formed, as I believe it is the intention to send a Rep. team visiting.

Owing to one of the Hockey Club’s in Taihap© sending a team to Raetihi on Thursday next, the night of which the Old Girl’s Hockey Club intended •to hold their social and dance, it has been? decided that the social should take place on Monday night next, the 19th inst. Purchasers of tickets and others who intend to be present are requested to note the alteration.
