U-BOAT HUN’S HUMOUR

HIS “BABY-KILLER” LETTER TO “LLOYD GEORGE, ESQ.” “Post these to Lloyd George, when you get ashore,” said the commander of a Hun submarine to a survivor of the torpedoed Irish steam packet Inniscarra, as he handed him some letters. One of the letters has reached London on its way to “Lloyd George, Esq., Prime Minister,” in a very official German envelope, signed, countersigned and German stamped. Its writer attempts to exploit a gift of irony of the heavy-handed, Teutonic variety, -which, says the “Evening Standard” telling the story, is enough to make a light-handed Frenchman weep “We have been having a nice and interesting time in the Irish Sea” he informs the Prime Minister, “All w r e have missed,” he goes on to say, “is some of your speeches to laugh over.” Then he expresses his personal regard for the Prime Minister, of England and his schemes to “securate” the future of Europe. With some further remarks in the same strain, he signs with his name and his rank as second lieutenant, and the descriptive inscription, “Hun Barbar and Baby Killer.” AVritten on two folios, the letter is in indelible blue ink, and has on it what resembles sea water stains.
