THE READING ROOM EPISODE.
Sir, —Surely you were very short of news when you published the childish effusion of Mr. J. T. Davey, who evidently has a penchant for appearing in public. By just a little calm reflection Mr. Davey should have recognised that as a guardian of the public interest (?) his clear duty lay in either informing the Municipal Authorities •or informed the police, who are always on the alert for such cases as that of the bibulous individual referred to. To my knowledge it is absolutely the first instance of the kind that has taken place in the Reading-Room, or has been complained of, and as the subject matter of the letter reflected on the town, and possibly on "a public official, to wit. the Town Hall custodian, I think you would have been well advised had you done as you did some time ago with the same writer, i.e., refuse to publish a letter of so little moment and certainly of less public interest. Surely Mr. Davey was not one of the noble gang whose time was of 'so little account last Monday that i they gathered together at the Town Hall corner to throw snowballs at -all and sundry, ladies and elderly men Included. If he is, his time is not very valuable and he might quite easily better employ himself than he is doing by appearing in the public gaze or writing about drunks., birth-rate, cost of bread and meat, and other matters of which he knows very little.—i am, etc., "CRITIC."
