The Sack of Paris.
(Continued from page 2.))
pounds of mine and the two thousand I lent you? Where are they? Do you understand?" RUDOLPH THAUSE.
I shall never forget what a terrible time the rest of our stay in Paris was. The Baroness was She hated to lose a penny, and, though 1 should, of course, pay her back the two thous. and pounds she had lent to me, she was still that amount to the bad herself.
"Now," she said to me when we were back in Berlin, "I'm going to see Rudolph Thause, and then I'll ring you up, Schroeder, and tell you when to come and see me."
I got her message that evening, and found her in a most furious rage, worse than I had ever seen her before.
"That young man has done us. If only I come across him again! Papa Thause greatly regretted the loss of my two thousand pounds, but, of course, he coudn't do anything in the matter, and he said he certainly would not withdraw his opposition to the proposed war, and it was a beautiful day. wasn't it? And so the matter ended. Mein Gott! if ever -I catch that young Thause!"
Then for the life of me I couldn't help the nicker of a smile creeping over my face, which Elsa saw. Now. if'there was one thing she hated almost above all others, it was to he laughed at ; and that,, with the loss of her money and her anger at having been swindled, was too much for he*-.
"And you—you laugh at me, do you, Schroeder!" she screamed. "Take that!"-
She flung herself at me, slapped me soundly on the check, then collapsed into a chair in a fit of hysterical weeping, and 1 thought it wiser to creep quietly out of the room.
In what strange way the Kaiser was made to give orders to the German Fleet, involving the battle of Jutland, will be disclosed by Colonel Schroeder next week.
