ON THE SEA.
UNION STEAMER WAITEMATA LOST. ALL HANDS SAFELY LANDED. WELLINGTON, July 24. The naval advisor regrets to report that the Union Company’s steamer Waitemata has been sunk in European ■waters. Fortunately there was no loss of life, all hands being safely landed. The Waitemata was a steel screw steamer of 5432 tons register, built at London in 1908. The Waitemata is the ninth steamer I of the Rod Funnel fleet lost since the war began. The list now comprises: The Avenger, Aparima (torpedoed), Waikawa (torpedoed), Waitemata, Waihemo, Wairuna, Maitai, and Waitotara (lost by fire at sea). WHITE STAR LINER SUNK. I " Received 9.20 a.m. NEW YORK, July 24. The White Star liner Justitia has been sunk off the Irish coast. Pour hundred of her crew and passengers landed in Ireland. She' was outward bound, and fought a U-!hoat for 24 j hours. Only eleven were killed. i |AN IMPOSING NAVAL PAGEANT. } —• Received 11.5 a.m. LONDON, July 24* The King visited an important naval depot, where he inspected the biggest and most powerful naval force ever , assembled. American vessels participated in the pageant. His Majesty proceeded to the quarter deck of the flagship for an unparalleled historical ceremony, the war-time investiture, afloat of decorated officers and men of the American and British navies for gallant exploits.
