U-BOATS AGAIN OPERATING ON U.S. COAST. CRUISER LOST FROM UNDETERMINED CAUSE. NEW YORK, July 19. German submarines are attacking trans-Atlantic craft off the American coast. The liner Carpathian has been sunk with small loss of life, while another large vessel has also been torpedoed. The cruiser San Diego has been sunk off the coast, but the naval authorities are as yet unable to state whether she was torpedoed or sank from some other cause. It is announced that one of the Queensland cargo steamers has been 1 sunk by the enemy i The San -Diego was a cruiser of 15,138 tons, and was Go2ft. long, with a beam of 70 ft., her draught being 26ft. She was built in San Francisco in 1904, and was armed with four Sin. guns, fourteen Gin. eighteen 3in., and two torpedo tubes. She carried a crew of 890 men, and was protected by Gin. armour.
The Carpathian was a steel steamer of 4900 registered tons. She was built in 1908 by Messrs. Armstrong, Whitworth and Co., Ltd,, at Newcastle and was owned by the Petroleum SjS.'Cb., Her dimension were: Length 3Ssft, breadth 51ft. and depth 27ft. THE STEAMER BARUNGA SUNK. NO LAVES LOST. Received 8.55 a.m. LONDON, July 21. The Barunga was sunk at daybreak. There were over seven hundred alboard, including four hundred incapacitated Australians. Destroyers immediately went to her assistance and surrounded the sinking ship. There was remarkable order throughout while transferring the men to the boats and rafts. A submarine was seen two hundred yards away, and the Barunga’s guns were turned upon her, but she dived andr escaped. The Bar. unga floated for ten hours. Those on board lost everything.
