TAIHAPE UNDER SNOW

~~W • L . » The people of this neighbo'urho«^ (t awoke this morning ,to find that a. thick mantle of snow had been spread over the whole town and over the hills: that surround it on all sides. Snow continued to fall till eighl o'clock, adding to the unique scene that' snow- ' laden boughs and branches" of trees and shrubs preseated In yesterday’s-, issue of this journal There' was chronicled a fall of snow in Ohakune and over all the higher altitudes along the Main Trunk Railway, and 1 it is once more impressed upon the people of Taihape that their town is: by no means immune from such visitations. It rained heavily the previous evening and well on into the early morning to-day, but about half pasttwo, the rain commenced giving place to snow, and by five a..m. the ground and hills were quite covered. For a little while the fall dwindled to Almost nothing, but at half past seven it commenced coming down thickly, As the sun rose'a magnificent effect was produced by the glinting and glistening in every direction. The fall was of an average depth of about two iches, more in some places, but not much less anywhere. It was a novel experience to many who had lived their lives in warmer localities, and both boys and grls made the best of a rare opportunity to indulge in snow fights. Later the sun came out and soon converted the snow white 'streets into veritable sludge channels. Borough roadmen found a new occupation in clearing the footpaths and streets so as to render traffic as convenient as’ possible. A strong, gusty wind in the early morning blew the snow intomany open windows of bedrooms of people who believe somewhat in open air living, and considerable pools of water had to be cleaned up.
