A resident of Dunedin, who has made a practice for some time past of sending parcels of flour to a relative in Dundee., received word by the last mail that ohc of these parcels, which arrived in Scotland several weeks ago, wash "a perfect Godsend/' as the bakers in Dundee’had been on strike for ; some days, and no bread was procurable from them. fi .V'Ji Hi

The Minister for Defence has received a report from Brigadier-General G. S. Richardson, officer commanding the New caland Expeditionary Force in England,, stating that the Thirtyfourth Reinforcements arc very good, both physically and in respect of training.
The Red Jersey Appeal is coming to Taihape; many thousands of pounds have been contributed to' this very deserving fund in most centres of any size in New Zealand, and in fact, throughout 'The Allied world. The ■Mayor, Mr A. L. Arrowsmith, has invited all those willing to assist the Red Jersey Appeal to meet in the Town Hall, Supper Room,, at S p.m. on Friday, the 26th inst.
Men are often seen about the streets wearing part of a military uniform with mufti. In this respect greatcoats seem to be the favourite garment. This is an infring'ement of Military Regulations, ‘and one which is not going to be tolerated in future. In last district orders instructions wore given to Group Commanders to have all such offenders dealt with, and the police are requested to take the necessary action.
It pays to wield the axe and saw these days, and it would appear that the man of brawn and muscle is coming into his own (says the Tuatapore Guardian, Southland). Locally, i n prewar days,, a first class bushmafl could be procured for 11s or 12s at the outside. As high as 26s 8d a day is now being paid for good men, some of the leading bushmen's pay amounting to £25 a month. Post-splitters arc simply coining money, • making from 25s to 30s daily at this work, Even at these high rates a great scarcity of labour exists, and men are hard to procure who have a knowledge of bushcraft.
A boy, to learn the tailoring trade, is wanted by Mr J. Do Lucn. The Auckland Red Jersey appear has netted £16,303 to date. After several weeks of continuous rain Taihape seems, to-day, to bo about to enjoy one complete day of line weather
In the lunch hour to-day the fircboll rang out a rather lengthy peal. A large crowd followed after the brigadesmeu with their fire-fighting appliances, but no fire seemed discoverable.

To-morrow evening a social and dance is being held at Bennett’s Sidig in aid of Red Cross Funds. The ladies have left no stone unturned to make this affair equal to the best ever held in their midst, and that is saying a good deal. The hall floor is being specially prepared, first-class music has been arranged for, and the ladies are seeing that no one goes hungry. No doubt there will be a fairly largo contingent from. A collision occurred on Tuesday night at Christchurch between two motor cyclists, each with a side-chair. One was ridden by W. Carrington and the other by Charles Begg. Both men were throwh over the handle bars. Begg was unconscious when picked up in the side channel, and died after being admitted to the hospital. His wife was in the side-car, but was uninjured. Begg was about 39 years of ago, and was employed in a responsible position by the City Council electrical department. ~ •
A proposal is on foot to arrange for Taihapo Hockey players to kave a representative team at the annual hockey championships which are decided in Wellington. Without doubt there is splendid material from which to select a really good team, which with judicious and careful practice should have a good chance of bringing some of the honours to this town. Those who are interesting themselves in our lady hockey clubs would do well to do all they can to enable Taihape being represented at the forthcoming championship mceting_
