AUSTRIAN AFAIRS.
AUST R 0-G ERMA N RELAT 10 N S STRAIWED, - DETAILS OF PIAVE DISASTER. 200,000 CASUALTIES. Received 9.5 a.m. LONDON, July 15. The "Daily News" Berne "correspondent states that relations between Germany and Austria arc strained. The disaster at the Piave has exhausted Germany's patience, while Austria is putting on pressure to secure the offer of peace propositions which there is some chance of the Allies considering.
Details of the fighting on the Piave, despite the censorship, and leaving out those slightly wounded, show there were 200,000 casualties, whereof 10,000 were drowned, and that 40,000 fled eastward. The economic situation in Austro. Hungary is intolerable. There are spasmodic strikes daily, and the bread is often almost uneatable. The authorities are relying on the harvest to save the situation, but owing to the frosts there will be only moderate returns.
The authorities have difficulty in dealing with armed deserters, thousands of well-equipped operating in the mountain districts. The police have arrested three thousand armed deserters in Budapest.
