A SUCCESSFUL OPERATION.
MILE GAINED ON 2J-MILE FRONT
LONDON, July 9
A French communique states: Between Montdidier and the Oise we carried out at 3.30 in the morning a local operation east of Antheuil on a front of 21 miles. Supported by tanks, we penetrated the enemy lines and carried Porte Farm and Des Loges Farm, and advanced over a mile at certain points. The enemy’s counter attack at Des Loges Farm was repulsed. We maintain all gains. Up to the present we have prisonered 450 unwounded Huns, including fourteen officers.
South of the Aisne the artillery duel continued actively.
At night-time, in the Chavrigny. Farm region we progressed again, prisonering several. There is reciprocal artillery fire east and north of Chateau Thierry, especially at Hill 204.

ON THE BRITISH FRONT.
LONDON, July 9
Sir Douglas Haig reports; Londoners made a successful raid, eastward of Arras. The enemy artillery is active against positions recently captured southward of the Somme. Prisoners captured in the Australian sector paid a tribute to the weight and accuracy of our shellfire, in Consequence of which they word without rations for two days, and the morale of the troops sensibly lowered. It ' was so difficult to ration the outposts’ line that the enemy were forced to use aeroplanes for this 'purposeh ~A box of bully beef and biscuits was dropped by mistake from a low-flying plane on to one of our forward posts. This was the first time such practice had been adopted on the Western front. A British Headquarters correspondent says. Dry weather broke on the night of the Bth. Violent thunderstorms were followed by terrific hail. MORE AUSTRALIAN SUCCESSES. Received 11.15 a.m. LONDON, July 10. The United Press correspondent re. ports that the Australian near Morris captured positions 250 yards forward along a 1200 yards front. The Australians at Villers Bretonneux dashed on slightly, and established new trenches. BELGIUM’S MARTYRDOM. WASHINGTON, July 9. The Belgian Minister has issued a statement to the effect that deportations and forced labour of Belgians by the Germans continues in the military zones Belgians are compelled to work behind the German front under Allied fire, THE ANZACS' ADVANCE. NEW YORK, July 9. New York newspapers give great promience in principal cross-page headings to the Anzacs’ advance on the Somme, and the capture of trenches at Hazebrouck. Correspondents tribute the Australians’ valour and success as aggressive fighters. Tha New York “World’s” correspondent at the British front says: A remarkable spirit of camaradie has grown up between the Australians and 1 the Americans.
