NEW AND IMPORTANT POST.

LONDON, June 27,

Leutcnant-General Sir John Monash’s appointment as Commander of the Australian Corps is likely to be folowed by uarly promotion to a higher position owing to the' extreme difficulties which prevent General Sir W. Birdwood carrying out the increasing duties as general commander of the for:" " conjunction with his new and post with the British armies in France.

General Birdwood’s step is a distinct progress for him, putting him among the few leading generals at the front. Mr Hughes states that the resulting changes -will shortly mean that Australians will be throughout commanded and administered by Australians, who have proved themselves as levelheaded and sound in command of administration as in fighting. ‘The Times says that General Birdwood has temporarily taken up more important work in the field in France than the command of the Australian corps. His courage, devotion, and qualities of leadership have endeared him to the troops, who, none the less, welcome the Australianisation of the comand. General Monash is known throughout the front for the thoroughness of the organisation of his division
