MILITARY SERVICES.

i NEWt ZEALAND’S EFFORT. WELLINGTON. July 4. Important cables have recently been passing between the Dominion and England in regard to the reinforcements of the Expeditionary Force and Sir James Allen, immediately ou his return to Wellington on Monday, commenced ■ ieview the man-power position with a view to making an important statement on the subject of future reinforcements. The Dominion is in a very favourable position, as the casualties on the Western front have been much fewer than were anticipated. Thero is no knowing what the next two months may bring form, but New Zealand is well guarded against the contingency of heavy casualties. As a matter of prudence, however, provision must be made for I9lb, and this is the reason why so many Second Division men have been ordered to mobilise in August, September, and October. Their advent in camp will provide the instructors wfth adequate material, and we may expect the drafts to diminish in number after October. There is doubt that the military authorities are seriously concern, ed over the selling up of homes and closing of small businesses, which seems to be going on all over the Dominion. Home selling is not anvisea, for men may be rejected after entering camp. This often happens after a recruit has received months of training. An eyesight expert recently got to work in camp and rejected a number of men who had almost completed their training, while it is well known that, the medical inspection in camp is much more rigorous than that made at the time of attestation. In most cases, the grants from the Financial Assistance Board should obviate any necessity for selling up a home, though so much criticism has been directed at this Board that a contrary impression of an exaggerated nature seems to prevail. As far as can he Indicated at the moment Class A and Class B reservists may all mobilise at the original dates, but Class C men may anticipate a slackening off in the call to camp.
