VALEDICTORY.
A pleasing little function took place at Mataroa last night, when some forty or fifty friends foregathered to take farewell of Private Charles Scott, who is on his final leave. Private Scott has for some years worked in the Mataroa district, where he has won the esteem and respect of all with whom he lias come in contact for his many - sterling qualities. It was felt that the occasion of his leaving on active service could not be allowed to pass without some effort on the part of residents of the district in marking the esteem in which they held the departing soldier. Mr J. Corkill, himself a returned soldier, on behalf of the Mataroa people, made a presentation of a handsome wristlet watch, and in doing so, voiced the good feelings entertained by all. He wished the recipient every success, saying that he knew from experience, having worked with Private Scott, that he would do his duty right well, and if the worst happened it would be found that he liad his face to the foe. He wishe'd him “God speed/' and a safe return. (Applause) Private Scott, in a few simple words, thanked the donors for their handsome present, and for the very kind sentiments which, prompted it. He wofuld aways look back with pleasure to the period of his residence among them, and whenever he looked at the watch he would remember the givers. Dancing was then indulged in, after which a smoker was held, at which the usual loyal and personal toasts were proposed and drunk. Piivate Scott leaves the district tomorrow for embarkation at an early date.
