A story of a millionaire from California, who was going to distribute £20,000 amongst the Belgian poor in London, was the bait used by an alleged confidence trickster, Accused was Paolo Carlotti, an Italian waiter, who was remanded at the Guildhall. It was said that he met an ex-Belgina soldier, Jean Speltinx, and introduced him to a man with a black beard, who was described as the benevolent millionaire. To show his confidence the Belgian, who was told he would get £2OOO, was asked to make the millionaire a handsome present. He said he had £35, and was told to fetch it. but became suspicious and informed the pojico.
