AUSTRIA ’ S " GRAVE DANGER. ’ ’ SERIOUS FOOD SHORTAGE All sorts of information as to the food conditions of Austria are valueless compared with the actual statements of the officials of that country. These are usually guarded, but the burgomaster of Vienna made a speech recently which contained some serious admissions. He spoke of the ''“greatly-increased privations of the population. ’ ’ and declared that the ‘ ‘ anprehensions ” depressed by . |the city’s representatives last autumn ‘ * have unfortunately been realised.” He added: —•
‘‘ We are now in want of the most necessary provisions; rations are scanty and even a reduced ration is not always to be had. This deficit is increasing from day to day, and there is grave danger that the war work of the country cannot for long be turned out in sufficient quantity, aipd that the health of the growing youth in city and country is exposed to serious danger.” In another part of his address the burgomaster referred to "our sorelytried population,” and frankly admitted that the "peace with Great Russia,” would not increase Austria’s "supply of provisions.” In reply to to his questions as to what might be expected from the Ukraine and Roumania, the burgomaster was informed that the supplies from the former were "naturally only small,” and that the later would provide the " surplus” of the "forthcoming harvest.”
