THE SLIP ON MAIN TRUNK LINE.
(Special Correspondent.), Our special correspondent tele, phones us at mid-day to-day that the slip which came down on the Main Trunk line on Saturday is situated just north of Mangaweka, in a long cutting. The slip came down about 40 feet, and deposited *about 12 feet of earth and stones on the line. The slip was a difficult one to get at owing to the cutting, and although there were two ballast trains on the job only one could do any real effective work. However the block was cleared and the mail train got through on schedule time on Saturday night. There is another break in the hillside not far away, and there is every probability that this will come down over the line before very long. There are numerous slips on th« Kawhatau road, and large gangs of men are busily engaged in clearing them away. In the meantime traffic on the road is blocked. The electricity supply at Mangaweka has been very erratic lately, being more often out of action tnan otherwise, with the result that pumping operations are anything but satisfactory, with the result that sanitary arrangements of the town are in a state of" chaos.
