In the Prussian Lower House the Independent Socialist, Hoffman, stated that hundreds of Independent Socialists had been sent to the trenches as a punishment for their political activity, while those unfit were sent to prison, where many died of hunger. He declared that half a million men were killed in Germany's new offensive. GERMANY'S INTERNAL STATE A DUTCH MERCHANT'S STORY. . LONDON, June 22. The New York Times' Hague correspondent interviewed a Dutch merchant returned from Germany, who said the population is suffering from a mysterious disease caused by malnutrition owing to incessant diet of turnips. Workmen at Essen are dying 'in hundreds. The disease starts in a small inflammation, then water swelling, which spreads over the body until the patient dies. Fats are unprocurable. People are wearing under garments made of paper as cotton is not obtain* able.
