CONFISCATED FINERY.
■A WAY THEY HAVE IN HUNLAND. A cruel hoax on German maidenhood is reported by the “Kieler Zeitung”:— All the girls in Iliringshausen Avert; up bright and early last Sunday, dressing themseHes in their best and producing from sundry cunning hiding, places fine raiment of all descriptions... The herr burgomaster had promised them a dance in the to\v« hall in the afternoon. The girls, all smiles and dainty lace and 1 silk, trooped to the hall, where fpr twcT hours they vainly aAvaited partners and musicians. »At length the burgomaster arrived, and having .Closed, the doors behind him, mustered i ihe festively garbed girls, each of .ryhom' vyas order to sign her name on feheet of official paper. The burgomaster then announced that the dance wouid.not take place. Sadly disappointed ,the fair ones departed, and the following day the burgomaster sent a number of policemen" oh, a visit to the houses of the would-be dancers, and, despite their I ' tearful protestations that they had “really nothing to wear,” the whole or their finery was seized and confiscated. : The invitation to the dance had been merely an official ruse to secure the forbidden garments.
