BAREFOOT BY LAW.
GERMAN CHILDREN ROBBED OF THEIR BOOTS. AMSTERDAM Germany’s newest summer fashion will be going barefoot. Several newspapers publish pathetic appeals to this cud, and in particular the Rhcin-ish-Wesfalische which declares that, ‘‘in view of the alarming scarcity of leather, rich and poor alike should dispense with boots and shoes. ’ ’ As this measure, however, might bo too drastic for elderly people, the journal especially addresses the young "Why not walk on your bare feet? You would thus help the Fatherland by economising in leather and also in stockings of which we are also running short and which, we would re- & , i mind you, occupy so much of your dear mothers’ time in keeping in repair. "Let the rich take the lead in this movement, and then let them tell the people: ‘Follow the example of your elders and do not be ashamed to walk barefoot everywhere —at home, in the streets, at school on excursions. Therey by you will also propane for a return to our saintly old German simplicity. ’ ” Tho. appeal is not likely to meet with such success. If this appeal is not obeyed, the authorities will make barefoot walking compulsory on all schoolchildren.
