GALLANT AUSTRALIANS.
A DRAMTIC EPISODE. LONDON, June 4. After fighting beside the French in Hangard Wood the Australian force, which did such good work before Amiens, brilliantly drove out a German party, which penetrated part of ' our line near Mor]a;*court. A few days later they raided and captured a German post in the plain light of morning. Two days later still they seized Villo. Of all these undertakings that which has been probably least reported was ia ■counter-attack njear Morlancourt, Here early on the morning of M<jy 14, just after our guns had carried #ut a bombardment upon a certain German post, a German party specially chosen, attacked. Our line had been recently advanced and there was one weak place, the strengthening of which had not quite been finished. It was near that the Gormans overcame a couple of small outposts. The first, the line north of this point knew was a shout that the Germans had got through behind us. The next minute figures appeared, corning at a trench, front and rear. The Australians wore not certain whether they were their own men or Germans. Then a figure, which was leading, shouted to the rest. Bayonets went down to the charge, and they rushed towards the trench shouting.. Half-a-dozen Australians fired at them coolly. Five fell including the leader, The rest sank into a cornfield. They remained the hind our line, but later during the morning these were all captured or killed by a counter-attack, arranged by the company officers on the spot, The whole story is a very splendid one, and deserves to rank beside the taking of Yille by the same division a few days later.
