RANGITIKEI A. & P. ASSOCIATION.
SWEDE TURNIP JLOT COMPETITION. The judge, Mr W. E. Anderson, has made the following report and awards in the Swede Turnip plots competition:. I have much pleasure in reporting as follows on the various plots of swede turnips entered for competition under the auspices of the Association and must say there were some very fine plots as regards strike of swede and evenness of bulb, which showed there had been great care exercised by the growers, in preparing the seed beds, as well as in the drilling of the seeds. On the other hand I am sorry to say that in every plot there was evidence of the disease known as “dry rot,” in some instances to the extent of almost half the crop being valueless for. feeding purposes. This is a, serious matter for growers of swedes and I think if growers turned their attention to the rotation of crops it tvould get over a lot of the trouble with the disease. I may state that in the plots entered for competition “Crimson King” swede wsa freer from “dry rot” than any other. Plot No. I—D. Scott. Excellent crop, most even throughout; slightly affected by “dry rot.” This plot is entitled to first prize. Plot No. 2 —J. Sinclair, Very good crop; grown rather much to nock; fairly even and almost free from disease. Variety “Crimson King.” This plot is entitled to second prize. Plot No. 3—R. Wilkie. A very good crop, very even take, fairly even in bulb; rather badly diseased. Plot No. 4 —W. McCombie. A very good crop; very even take, fairly even in bulb; rather badly diseased. Plot No. 5—H. O’Callaghan. Very good crop, rather uneven in bulb, showing disease. Plot No. 6 —A. E. Fannin. A fair strike, bady affected by disease
