The names of those drawn in the last ballot, C Class, will be published next "Wednesday.

The manufacture of beer in England has been reduced from 36,000,000 barrels to 14,000,000 barrels.

British loaned £1,186,000,000 to her allies up to December, 1917, and £175,000,000 to the Dominions.

The picturization of Charles Dickens immortal work "A Tale of Two Cities'' will be shown in the Town Hall on Tuesday next.

Corporal C. T. Munro, writing from hospital in France, acknowledges with grateful thanks the receipt of three parcels sent by the Women's Working Club, Taihape.

Caterpillar and other insect plagues are destroying crops of fruit, vegetables, and grass in several English counties. Thousands of trees were stripped of foliage.

A hauler-driver for tho Oio sawmills and two bushmcn for the Turangarere mills are advertised for by Messrs. G-. W. Gardner and Sons. Applications will be received at either mill.

General Foeh, replying to a message from the B'ritish Ex-Soldiers' Association expressing perfect "faith that he and his gallant men would again stem, the tide of invasion, said: "I share entirely your confidence." Messrs. F. Ward and Co., will held their weekly sale at the Tui Street mart to-morrow, when poultry, fruit, gigs, trained sheep dogs and household sundries will be offered. Seventeen fishing boats were sunk off the coast of County Down, Ireland, on May 31. The submarine commander ordered the crews to take to the boats. Some remonstrated, and the commander replied: "No parleying,' get in or you go to hell." He shot one man through the arm.

The finding of a number of wrappers in a drain pipe at the Hastings Post Office has apparently led to the discovery that a number of parcels, mostly addressed to soldiers, have been stolen. Jt is said that a lad employed in the Post Office has.made a confession, and that the matter has been reported to the head office.

At the Auckland Police Court ion Wednesday, Ockerstron, a milk vendor was charged that he sold milk containing added water. The evidence was that an analysis showed 15 per cent, of added water. The milk was originally very rich. The defendant was fined £2O and the conviction is to be advertised.

The children of the Catholic Convent School will have charge of the Women's Working Club Shop to-mor-row, when a really first-class selection of goods will be submitted for disposal. The children have for some time past been busily preparing for their "Day" and we hope the result will be commensurate with their efforts. A glance at the advertisement in another column will give an idea of the comprehensiveness of their goods, ancr it only remains for their seniors to do their share in leaving the Shop with bare shelve*.
