STRAIGHT TALK TO LABOUR.
The message to American Labour ,from Premier Hughes shows that, despite his delicate health and his war. wornness through the cares of office, the great Australian has not lost his punch. It is a message full of sledgelike phrases, driving home essential facts, as important to English, Australian and New Zealand Labour as to that of America. Some phases of 1 British Labour, after being on its best and most patriotic behaviour, is again becoming restless, despite the fact that the Kaiser's hosts are knocking at the front door of Paris. The declaration of Mr. Hughes that victory in this war is essential to the future freedom and well-being ■of the whole world is not a whit short of the exact truth. He is perversely blind who fails to recognise this fact. Of all men, the Labourites of America have recognised this since President Wilson declared America on-side Avith the Allies and, led by Sam Gompers and the great Federation of Labour, the American workers have shown a truer national spirit than the Britishers, though the latter hav e been so near tb the scene of the world conflict.
