A PECULIAR ACCIDENT.
) ON MAIN TRUNK LINE. Some of the passengers by the Main Trunk express from Wellington to Auckland on Wednesday night were treated to a rather exciting incident. About 11 p.m., whilst the express was descending the Spiral, a stone, about 61b. in weight, that had apparently been dislodged from the bank by the vibration of the train, crashed through a window of one of the forward se-cond-class carriages, landing between two of the seats, the occupants of which, a lady and child and two gentlemen, marvellously escaped injury, though the stone in falling brushed the legs of one of the latter. The lady was some time before she recovered the effects of the fright. Other passengers had narrow escapes from the flying glass. Some idea of the force with which the stone fell could be gathered from the fact that, in addition to breaking the glass, it cut a piece out of the woodwork of the sash and it is probably due to this having expended some of its energy that there are no serious results to chronicle.
