HIDING AN ESCAPEE.
TWO WOMEN HEAVILY FINED. AUCKLAND, June (5. Charges arising out of the escape £rc™ mEffc'ary custody ,in last of George Caffeiy, and his subsequent recapture iu a house in Auckland, were heard at the Police Court to-day. Esther Hutland and Julia, alias Mary Dickson Mclvor, were charged with a breach of the War Eegulations 5". having withheld information as to Caffery's whereabouts from the police, Caffery was an absentee from camp, and was arrested by the police on the the 2nd February, twice escaping from custody and finally being arrested at Newcastle. Evidence showed that the accused asserted that' Caffery's name was Brown, and on the occasion of the arrest they stated he was not there, whereas Caffery was discovered hiding in a chimney. Accused at first pleaded not guilty, but on the police withdrawing the other charges of being disorderly and idle persons and the occupiers of a house frequented by reputed thieves, they pleaded guilty. Each was fined £IOO.
