Charman (Mr. Blair), boot ai)>d shoe manufacturer Wellington, appealed on the ground that he is engaged in an essential industry—the manufacture of low-priced children’s footwear. His staff was right down to a minimum, and if his business was closed down great hardship would be inflicted on many people who were dependent on his cheap output, Mr. Blair: What is the highest wholesale price you charge? Appellant: The highest is 8/6 a a pair. The Chairman; What do they charge the unfortunate retail purchaser? J| Appellant: Well, there you are. A Member; Couldn’t you insist on a retail price? w ? Appellant; I make up only for the warehouses. Another Member: The public don’t benefit. The wholesalers and retailers clap on the prices. The Chairman: If we could see that ! the public received any benefit wo would be glad to help you. If the public knew what they were paying and what you were charging they might begin to make inquiries. The price of I boots is becoming absolutely out* rageous. '% Appellant: It is. He added that he employed 23 hands and used a good deal of locally-made leather. If he went into camp his business would have to be closed. The Board decided to visit the fao tory.
