GERMANY MUST PROTECT RUSSIA.
Germany, with touching solicitude, declares that she must protect Russia against Japan. We have heard something like that jest before, says the "Daily Chronicle." Did not the German Emperor cause an allegorical picture, "The Yellow Peril," to be painted on the subject? In the foreground stands a very Prussian Archangel Michael, inviting a group of mailed ladies to leap down a precipice in order to reach a s'ort of "Arabian Nights" genii, engaged in a most uncommon act of levitation, riding placidly on fire and smoke through the Eastern sky. Germany grips her shield and clutches her drawn sword, and seems only restrained by Russia from taking the leap. France, with corselet of steel, but in a skirt so dowdy as to constitute a casus belli against the artist, scans the horizon warily; Austria tugs at the arm of Britannia, who appears to see*no'cause of quarrel. Nor do any of the nations, save Germany. So on the margin of the picture the Kaiser has written, "Nations of Europe, defend your holiest possessions." Which is truly Pecksuiffian, for at the time the only trouble was thpt C?e~many had seiFC'l ?. ~:i?e of. the h'jliofpossession of China!
