Red Cross Society.

The adjourned meeting of the Taihape Branch, of the Red Cross Society; was held last night, when there was again an extremely disappointing attendance, just the necessary number (ten) being present to form a quorum* The Mayor (A. L,, Arrowsniith, Esq.). occupied the chair. The annual report and balance sheet, as already published in these columns, was read and adopted. In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, Mr. Arrowsmitli said he could not help again remarking that judging by the attendance of the Taihape people that, night they; were quite indifferent as to what be. came of our. wounded andj/ disabled men on the battlefield. But this conclusion .osuld not be sustained-when he looked at. the balance shedpand saw the amounts remitted for Red Cross purposes by the people of this district. He was proud to say that Taihape had sent more money in proportion to its population than any other district. A few pounds short of £4OOO had been remitted to headquarters. But this good financial result was no excuse for the apathy shown by the contributors in the meetings held by the Society. Apparently the public were satisfied with the manner in which the business was conducted. Better attendances at the meetings was much to be desired, as it would give them some encouragement to carry on. After all, the main thing was to get the money to keep the work going. , : !3ff;| The election of officers was then proceeded with. President: Mrs. Studholme (re-elected); vice presidents, Messrs Arrowsmith, Studholme, Rev. Stent, and Mrs. Emerson. Committee: Mesdames Pleasants, Fannin, Bason, Sinclair, Matthews, Wrightson, Pitt, Misses Smith and J. Smith, Messrs Loughnan, Fannin and Dr. Sinclair; treasurer, Mr. Emerson (reelected) ; secretary, Mr. R. A. Davies,

Rev. W. F. Stent to retain tbe office of secretary owing other duties demanding his undivided attention. Referring to the balance sheet, Mr. Stent said the result of the year's work was very satisfactory. The administrative expenses also were extremely low —one penny in the £. The chairman voiced the feelings of the meeting when he said the work of Mr. Stent in the past had been of very real value, and they were very sorry indeed that his decision to relinquish tbe secretaryship was final. Mr. A. M. Ryan was re-elected hon. auditor.

A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the meeting.
