The Taihape Daily Times. AND WAIMARINO ADVOCATE

MONDAY, MAY 27, 1918. LEST AYE FORGET WHAT GERMANY FIGHTS FOR.

(With which is Incorporated The hape Post and Walca-arlao News).

The frequency with which Germany has for the past year or more been changing her war policy and Avar aims is becoming monotonous and nauseating. Not very long ago: the Riechstag renounced all intention to annex territory or exact indemnities, and democratic reforms of almost revolutionary character, from a German point of view, were promised, not only by the Reichstag, but also by the Kaiser himself. As Lord Robert Cecil stated at the anniversary of Italy’s entry into the war, “German professors were again teaching the blood and iron gospel. The Hendersons of England have been hoodwinked and made to look ridiculous by their belief in the protestations of German workers, who told the Hendersons that they were opposed to the war and the moment circumstances per. mitted they would join with British and French workers in an effort to for ever put down privileged rule, capitalism and modern commercialism. If the eyes of British workers, and the workers of this Dominion, were not already opened sufficiently to take in the real facts, «there can be nothing but wilful blindness after reading the words of a telegram sent to the Kaiser by a conference of workers representing all parts of Germany. The conference telegraphed to the Kaiser and to the German Premier ■‘ciemanding indemnities, annexation of territory for settlement, freedom of the seas and safety of frontiers.” These represent the sum total of Germany's original war aims and objects. Whenever danger threatened they have been stowed away, and fictitious aims have been substituted. The Kaiser has wailed before his God that he die not will the war, that war was forced upon him; all he and his people desired was to be left alone to work our their own destiny. After the successes of the Western thrust Wilhelm’s gpd would give him the victory over his enemies and the old brutal war aims of the Hohenzollerns were again resurrected. There is ample evidence from the mouth of the Kaiser to disclose fully what his aims are, and what he has been working to attaihlor many years past. Then why are British people so forgetful, or so credulous as to believe utterances that are as 'chanegable as the wind itself, and which are only intended to deceive? To his troops in July, 1900, he said, “When you meet the foe ,ycu wxIT defeat him, give no quarter, no prisoner* will be taken. Let those who fall into your hands be at your mercy. Just as the Huns, a thousand years ago, under the leadership of Attila, gained a reputation in virtue of which they still live in historical tradition, so may the name of Germany become known.” On another occasion the aims and objects of Germany were made still clearer from the mouth of- the Kaiser. He said to his great army: “Remember that you are the chosen people. The spirit of the Lord has descended on me because I am the Emperor of the Germans! I am the instrument of tne Most High, I am His sword, Tils representative!. Disaster and death to those who resist my will! Disaster and death to those who do not believe in my mission! Disaster and death to the cowards! Let them all perish, the enemies of the German people I God demands the destruction of our enemies! God, through my mouth, commands you to execute His orders.” These words were uttered to the German Army before tb(9 war; do they leave any doubt about what Germany is fighting for, or what Britain and her Allies are fighting against? The Crown Prince, following in his father’s footsteps said, “The conception of a universal peace was not German, neither did it appeal to Germans. “Then, the only possible understanding of

Germany’s war aims at the present, have been in the past, and will be in the future, are to make but one country in the world, and that is to be German; the Lord has commanded the Kaiser to destroy all others. He remarked on another occasion, “God will complete His work of civilising the world, it would one day be healed by Germany.” We think the Kaiser was wrongly understood, the word “healed” should have been spelt “heeled.” The German military caste is making the most of the territory recently gained in France to whip up the courage of their armies and to lull the German people into further belief in the advent of a period of peace and plenty through quick victory on the Western front. The cabling of the corrupting, lying nonsense about no annexations and no indemnities should be prevented; those who despatch them are fully aware that they are the lowest and most contemptible lies, and, therefore, their broadcasting cannot serve any good purpose. If the coming offensive results in stalemate, we shall again have the cables at work telling us that the Kaiser never willed the war .that Germany never had any intention of exacting huge indemnities, or of annexing captured territories; but, if those words of the Kaiser which were delivered in orders to his army before, or in the early stages of the war are kept in mind there will be no danger from a German campaign of lies and deception. Treitschke wrote, “The German statesman has no right to warm his hands with sjnug self-laudation, and comfort himself by saying, “T have neve'r lied;” this is the monkish type of virtue. Again, he said, “There is no other course open to us but to keep the subject race in as uncivilised a condition as possible, and thus prevent them from becoming a menace to their handful of conquerors.” When we read of our New Zealand Webbs, Hollands, Youngs and Rev. Chappies talking about not fighting such a reptile people let us’ read what Germany is fighting for as stated by the Kaiser and his staff. There is nothing more certain than that the Allies have to win this war, or the British Empire and the rest of the world must fall into slavery, and be kept in as an uncivilised condition as possible so as to prevent them ever again becoming a danger to their handful of conquerors. .w; : ■
