NEW ZEALAND’S JUGOSLAVS.
The response of Jugoslavs to the call to engage in Government work is still unsatisfactory, a very fair number of those notified to comply with the decision of the Government having refrained from complying therewith, while others are coming forward according to a statement made by the Commissioner (Mr. Cullen), with all sorts of unreliable excuses for not going to work. Definite information will not be known until the engineers in charge of the work have handed in their returns. The order issued by the Government called on all Jugoslavs in the Auckland province to enrol, irrespective of whether they are naturalised or not, or of their age. Threequarters of the males are single men. In all cases of reasonable excuses the Commissioner is meeting the men as fairly as possible. Those who have failed to register will bo arrested in the very near future.
