THE IRISH SITUATION
GERMAN PLOTS AND IREUaND. MONEY SPENT FREELY. Received 9.10 a.m. NEW YORK, May 22. In connection with the reported Secret Service discovery of a German agent plotting with the Sinn Feiners in the United States with the object of promoting a rising in Ireland, it is now stated that the agent also plotted with the Finns, negroes, and Lithuanians, to hamper the United States Government in its war activities, but failed. German money was freely spent in these efforts. It is reported unofficially that the plotters intended to divert England’s efforts from France. Many German communications were brought to the United States written in invisible ink and coded. It is reported that some Irish Radicals said the plan was if Hindenburg reached the Channel ports Germany would send troops, guns, and munitions to the Irish coast. A separate New York investigation has been started. FURTHER ARRESTS. Received 11.20 a.m. LONDON, May 23. Further arrests in Ireland include P. F. Burke, a well-known Sinn Fein, or, and Mistress Thomas Clarke, widow of a rebel executed in 1916.
