Satisfactory experiments are being conducted on Canadian Government railways with a telephone apparatus that permits verbal messages to be transmitted to ' and’ from moving trains.
The Gazette-issued yesterday contained the - names of over 9000 men, which, ;■with the first ballot issued a month ago, makes a total of between 18,0000 and 19,000 Glass B Second Division men.
Mr. Luther Burbank announces that he has evolved a new wheat, containing 14 per cent, of gluten. It is hardy and can be grown in all climates, from Hudson Bay in the frozen north, to Patagonia in the sultry south.
A Feilding draper has been informed by his London buyer that cotton is again advancing in price and that the government is limiting the output of the mills by half. The writer adds: “It is difficult to see where the upward tendency (in prices) will stop."

Asked if the shipping shortage will affect the increased proportion'of men sent from New Zealand in the next few months, Sir James Allen stated: — “We shall not be able to fully fulfil our obligations for lack of shipping space. The Imperial authorities asked us to icrease our reinforcements until the end of August. We shall not be able to transport full quotas, but will get pretty near.” The Minister was asked if reinforcements will then drop to normal. He replied: “I don’t think there’s any doubt about it.”
The New Zealand wool clip for the 1917-18 season may be said to bo practically disposed of, in so far as greasy wool is concerned. There are still crutchings to come" in, but for practical purposes the' wool year is ended. The quantities, valuecTat various centres, amount to 505,23 bales, making a total value of £11,491,547. The average weight per bale was 367glbs, and roughly the average weight per lb. was 3./2g.

The chairman of the Taihape and District Returned Soldiers’ Association has received intimation that this body has been registered, and is entitled to have the word “incorporated after its tittle, thus giving it a legal status.

A case of highway robbery was dealt with in the Juvenile Court at Masterton the other morning, the offender being a 10-year-oTu boy. The robbery consisted of sticking up another boy, who had a shilling tied in a handkerchief, and taking it from him. Six strokes of the birch were ordered by Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M.
