WANGANUI MYSTERY. MAN FOUND DEAD IN LOCKED BEDROOM. "jYVANGANUI, May 19: A mysterious affair was disclosed last night when the body of Thomas er Scott, of Jb'ulls, was found in a bedroom at the Criterion Hotel. Scott evidently entered the room unknown to* the proprietor on Friday night, and locked himself in. The room was entered by the window last night, and bod3 r , was found lying across the bed. BLACKMAILED. WOMAN CLERK'S DEFALCATIONS. WELLINGTON May 20. At the Supreme Court to-day Martha Hutchins, clerk of the Woodville County Council, who had pleaded guilty to misappropriating £565, the property of that body, came up" for sentence. Counsel said that she had hitherto borne a good character, that she was a single woman, and a few years ago gave birth to a child,- that two men had threatened to expose her and she gave them money to prevent exposure. - One m:;n was killed at the front, and the other died recent!v in Woodville. The- case was remanded for further inquiries.
