GREAT AERIAL WORK. 109 GERMANS DOWNED IN TWO DAYS Received 11.35 a.m. LONDON, May 19. One hundred and nine German aeroplanes were destroyed on the West front on Wednesday and Thursday; eight-one by British, twenty-five by French, and three by Americans On the Italian front one hundred enemy machines were brought down in thirty days. The famous French airman, Eugene Gilbert, was killed while testing an aeroplane. PARIS, May 19. The Government has awarded the Croix de Guerre with palms to Admirals Keys and Tyrwhitt, and sixteen other British naval officers for the Zeebrugge and Ostend, operations. LONDON, May 19. Haig's aviation report states that aeroplanes o n Friday dropped twentytwo tons of bombs on Tournai. Courtrai and Chaulnes railway stations, also on several aerodromes and billets all along. Hostile aircraft are less acthan recently, although .large formations are encountered well east of the lines. Our night fliers dropped' ten tons on Chaulnes, Hanbourdin, Douai and Marcoing stations, and Peronne and in the neighbourhood of Bsw paume. They dropped thirty-two' heavy bombs on Thionville, and Metz railway stations. Several direct Eta were observed. A fire, was started at Thionville. We made a successful'daylight raid on Saturday on railway sta-i tions, factories, and barracks in Cologne, thirty-three bombs being dropped. Bursts were seen in the railway sheds -
