ACCIDENT IN KING COUNTRYg i TAUMARUNUI, May 15. ' A serious accident occurred at Ta* ringamutu Timber Go’s line yesterday. Whilst a locomotive was approaching a bridge near No. 3 mill, a stringeil cap gave way and the locomotive went .over the side, dropping about five feet The driver, Thomas Ollington, tried to jump clear, but his legs were caught as the engine fell over. Tho unfortunate man, who was a most experienced and careful driver, was removed to the hospital, where it was found necessary to amputate one foot this morning. A SHIRKER ARRESTED, ON OUTWARD BOUND VESSEL. ’ GEEYMOUTH, May 15. A young man named Edward Conway under military orders to proceed to camp this month, a recent arrival from the North Island, was arrested aboard an oversea boat at Greymouth last night. He was found behind the bunker bulkhead under a coil of rope by the polled a few hours prior to the vessel’s departure. Ho was remanded till Mon<%r,to allow the police to complete inquiries, RETURN OF RETURNED SOLDIERS AND TWO HUNDRED WIVES. AUCKLAND, this day. A transport arriving to-day brings 840 returned and invalided soldiers, accompanied by two hundred wives, the marriage having taken place in England. RAHOTU RIOT CASES. EXEMPLARY SENTENCES. NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. At the Supreme Court this morning the chief justice delivered sentences in the Rahotu riot cases. Te Whiti was sentenced to 18 months and fined £2O, to he paid on release, in default, a further six months. Six other Maoris got six months imprisonment and £ll fine, and four others four months and £7. Six others were fined £5 and two years’ probation. Oneother was fined £'2 2s and two years’ probation.
