GERMAN'S PAPER TROUSERS. BOOTS MADE FROM SHIPS’ SAImS, COLLARS, 3s EACH. Paper trousers are now being worn by a large proportion of the men in Germany (says a “Central News,” Amsterdam, message). Woollen clothes are quite unobtainable by civilians, the whole of the available stocks of woollen fabric, and even huge quantities of second-hand clothing having been taken by the military authorities to enable them to furnish clothing for the armies. Whole suits are being sold to civilians which contain practically no fabric but paper, and the demand exceeds the supply. Collars are selling in Berlin for 2/6 and 3/ each, and boot laces of paper yarn are 7Jd per pair. Leather is almost unobtainable. Boots with wooden soles are worn even by the better classes, and fully 40 per cent, of the soldiers at the front wear them. The standard boots contain only 10 per cent of leather. In many cases the uppers are made out of old ships’ sails, tent awnings, and impregnated burlap. Paper for ordinary purposes has become so scarce that some powerful provincial papers are using low grade coloured papers.
