To be a New Zealander and a resid-j ent in the South Island and not > to, have received or seen a newspaper or letter for eight months in the present stressful times has been the experience of Mr, J. MeKenzie, of Martin's Bay.' Mr. MeKenzie is a runholder with his ; brother on the West-Coast in ijhe'vi'c--inity of Martin's Bay, about 20 milesnorth of Milford Sound. The run cattle, and once a year drive their surplus stock overland to .Lumsdeh, a journey occupying six we~Sks. There' is no civilisation near the brothers, and their mails are expected quarterly by the Hinemoa, which failed, on her last, two trips to call. Martin's Bay secures a 7 great deal of drift in the, course .of the year, and. paragraphs haVe, appeared from time to time'in relation .to bottles containing . sages, thrown over from ships, whieh ! T have been-picked up by the brothers., One of these, thrown over in the Aug-, tralian Bight, travelled a distance of 2240 miles before being picked up by Mr. MeKenzie. ii • ■
