SUBMARINE ACCIDENT.
| OFFICER’S THRILLING ; UNDERTAKING. The posthumous award of the gold Albert Medal has been made to the, late Commander Goodhart. When a submarine accidentally sank in 38ft of water, and the only prospect of saving the remaining crew was for someone to escape in order to concert measures with the rescuers who had arrived at the surface, Commander Goodhart volunteered to make the attempt. Carrying a tin cylinder with instructions for the rescuers, Commander Goodhart and the submarine’s commander entered the conning tower, which was flooded to their waists. A high pressure of air was then turned on, and the conning-tower lid opened. Goodhart toot a deep breath, and made his escape, but, unfortunately, he was blown against the super-structure and killed. The submarine’s commander, who had intended to return into the submarine after Goodhart’s escape, was involuntarily forced to the surface by the air pres-' sure, and thus enabled to effect the rescue of the submarine’s crew.
