GERMAN .INFANTRY., ADVANCES. LONDON, May 8. Idolater’s correspondeint ah British'; headquarters writing ou the evening of the Bth, says:, Following a heavy and continuous bombardment along a wide front ih Flanders, the German infantry this, morning, attacked south of Diekebuseh Lake. It was not a very.-; big. affair, being apparently only divisional in strength. The enemy penetrated our front line between the Lake and Ridge Wood. Some enemy parties arc reported in the eastern fringe of the wood, the greater part of which we hold, and which is likely to prove very costly to the enemy if he attempts to push on. We also hold Kleinevstraat. The fighting is being continued in fine weather The tactical objective of the operation is apparently an attempt to clear the way for a thrust towards Scherpenberg, from the north-east. It may prove the beginning of further fierce fighting in this refiion. FRONT PENETRATED AT CERTAIN POINTS LONDON, May 8. Sir DBlglas Haig reports: On the morning of the Bth the enemy launched a strong local attack against the Anglo-French, between La Clytte, and Voormezcele. After heavy fighting the centre attack entered the Allied front line at certain points. Fighting continues in these localities.. The attacks were repulsed at all other points • A successful French local operation advanced the line during the night southward of La Clytte, taking a number of prisoners We dropped four hundred bombs on different targets along the front. We brought down twelve German machines during air fighting, eight of which were brought down in one big encounter in the neighbourhood, of Dgai. None of our machines are miss-' ng. Artillery fire has increased around Balllenl and along the Ancre. Warplanes are swarming over the battlefields, in brilliant sunshiny weather. GERMAN OFFICIAL REPORT. SUCCESSES CLAIMED. LONDON, May 8. Wireless German official: We made a successful reconnoitring operation southward of Nieuport. We took some Belgian prisoners. Local engagements on the Somme resulted in British and French prisoners being taken. The enemy, after strong mining preparations, unsuccessfully attacked on both sides of the Corbie-Bray Road. Our fire effectively caught troops which were being kept in readiness. After a further attack during the night southward of the road, our coun-ter-attacks drove the enemy back.
