LORD MAYOR'S MISTAKE.
DON'T JUDGE BY APPEARANCES. BTHURST, April 23. The Lord Mayor of Sydney lias had some unusual experiences ' during his trip with the War Loan Tank, and at Goulburn where on Wednesday night the landship secured over £IO,OOO in investments, he recounted some of them. It is to be feared that Alderman Joynton Smith drew on his vivid imagination for some of them, but he vouched for the one about the man with the waggon. "Don\ judge by appearances," advised his Worship, while speaking to an enormous crowd in Auburn street. ' T used to, but a little episode which occurred between here and Sydney convinced me that it doesn't do. We were coming along a nice stretch of country road," he said, "when we overtook a weird and wonderful looking waggon drawn by a team of very ordinary looking horses. A real old wayback was driving and though it was a real off-chance, I rpulled up and delivered one of my four-minute .orations. When I concluded the old chap said: "Do you think it's a good investment?" ' '' Well, you know, I'd shown him it was but I had another shot. "Look here," I said, 'that old turnout of yours would be worth a couple of hundred. You could get it from a bank, even if the manager only g"avc it to you to get the thing away from the front door. " 'Well,' the old fellow replied quietly, 'l'm glad you think it's a good investment, 'cause I put £20,000 in the last war 'loan, and I'm putting £30,000 in this!" "And when I recovered consciousness," concluded the Lord Mayor, amidst shouts of laughter. "I found that the old chap owned a large slice of the State and was one of the richest men in the district. No, I don't judge by appearances any more."
