RETURNED SOLDIERS’ SOCIAL AND DANCE.
The social and dance held last night by the returned soldiers was an unqualified success, about 100 couples participating in the dancing. The floor was in splendid order, wiiicli combined with the excellent music provided by Mr. Edlin’s orchestra, made dancing a pleasure. The returned soldiers' were courtesy itself in attending to \ the wants of those present, and all ' were unanimous in expressing the the most enjoyable held in Taihap*. Messrs M. McLaughlan, Campbell, and Olsen (returned soldiers)- acted ■’ opinion that the function was one of as M s.C., and to their unselfish efforts no little of the pleasure of the evening was due. While it would be invidious to particularise anyone, • special mention must Be given to, Messrs Neely and Candy (secretaries),; and to their fellow-workers for the ex- _ cellence of the arrangements. The catering was in the capable hands of .< Mr, Denness, and he was successful “in handing out the goods.” During the evening the pupils of Miss Blomfield gave an excellent exhibition of dancing, the' names of the dancers be. ing Misses K. Williams, G. Peyton, Herbert, B. Wrightson, and Miss Mi-* land Neagle; and Masters C. McDonnell, M. Timbs, and W. Hiutz. The dancing took the form of a military ballet, and was much appreciated. Mr. Toni Smith sang “Trooper Johnny Ludlow” and “When the Sands of the Desert Grow Cold,” both items being well received. A fancy cushion was raffled during the evening, being won by Miss Mary Sinclair, cf Mataroa. Dancing was kept up till well past midnight, the social appropriately closing to the strains of “Auld Lang Syne.”
