AN INDIAN V.C.
The daring exploit which gained Jemadar Lieut. Gobind Singh the Victoria Cross was described by him in an interview. His squadron was cut oft from the main body during the Cambrai push, and was encircled on three sides by the enemy. Several orderlies who volunteered to carry a despatch were shot down, and Gobind Singh asked permission to go. He had Covered only a portion of the mile-and-a-half when his horseAvas shot, but he covered the remaining distance on foot. He returned with a reply, and braved a deadly hail of machine-gun fire, again losing his horse from under him. A third time he essayed the jouney with a fresh horse. This time the Germans put up a barrage of shells, and his mount was blown to pieces, but he walked the last 200 yards and deliver his despatch without sustaining a scratch. Shortly afterwards the Germans wore dislodged from their position, and the Indian cavalry, which had been isolated, -were rescued.
