APPRECIATION.
At the meeting of the Patriotic Society on Monday night, -when the appointment of a treasurct*’ whs brought up, it was stated that the late treasurer, Mr Deacon, was called up for military service, hc-nco his inability to continue the work.
Mr. Arrowsmith explained the position, and said Mr. Deacon was willing to fill the duties uhtil he went to camp, and initiate his successor into his duties. Mr Deacon had occupied the position since the inception of the Society, and carried out his duties with marked ability. He felt the least they could do was to record the appreciation of his services to the Society. Mr Aldridge considered something should bo done to show the Society’s recognition of his efforts. Mr Thurston quite agreed with this view. Mr E. McLaughlan suggested making a presentation of something that would eventually be useful to him on active service. Mr De Loree, speaking as a returned soldier, bore testimony to the sterling worth of Mr Deacon, who, he said hhd been of great assistance to him and other returned men. He moved that a sum of £25 be voted to Mr. Deacon, as a slight remuneration for his valuable services to the Society. (Applause.)) Mr. Arthur James, speaking as a member of the Returned Soldiers’ Committee, gave his hearty support to the motion. Mr. Deacon’s services needed no extolling; his work had been done in a. very able manner, and gratuitously. The sum mentioned was altogether inadequate to recompense Mr Deacon for the long and faithful services he had performed for the Society. , The motion was carried amidst loud applause.
