SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTION.
'ANNUAL MEETING OF HOUSE- . '.. - HOLDERS.
The annual meeting of householders for the election, of a School Committee for the ensuing year was held in the District High School last night. There was not a large attendance, but it was a slight improvement on that of previous years, the increase being accounted for by the presence of quite a number of lady members or the local branch of .the Plunket 'Society. Mr. J. A. Joblin was unanimously re-elected chairman. In acknowledging the confidence reposed in him, Mr. Joblin said he was putting up a bit of a record, as he had been chairman of the Committee since 1913. There was no other present member of the Committee that had served for five years without intermission. It was a labour of love, and he had been in company with men it was a pleasure to work with. If their meetings were small, it did not matter much, as it seemed that good men were always sent along. With reference to the Committee's accounts, the chairman explained the law compelled them being made up to 31st December, although the Committee remained in control till April, therefore they only represented eight months of the Committee's work, but a supplemental}balance sheet was made up to date, and while the December statement showed a credit balance of about £
the supplementary statement showed a credit of £135 5s lOd. He was pleased to say the Committee w.as not left without .money. They commenced the year with a balance of £2l Is lOd, and finished it with £135. Mr. Joblin explained that the ladies present were members of the Plunket Society. They were not present because of dissatisfaction with what th< Committee had done; they were net there to criticise and find fault; but they had realised that their duties c. not end by what they did for infant life; that life should be followed as the child grew, so that' what was'done for babies should not be rendered valueless in after years. On behalf 61 committeemen he was glad to ,'see
them present. The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed. The chairman moved the adoption of the Statement of Accounts and the Committee's report, and after it had been seconded he invited discussion. Mrs. de Latour thought it was a very good report; there seemed to be nothing arguable about it. The management had evidently been ably conducted, and the balance sheet ivas very creditable indeed..
Mr. Beban said he had been,a member .of the Committee for several years, and so far as this year's report and statement of accounts went they compared very favourably with anything that had previously been -ac complished.
Mr. W. 'McLennan had little to say; the work of the Committee during the past year needed no comment whatever,/'
On a motion by Mr. W. J. H. McCormick a unanimous vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Pleasants for having presented the school with a flag. The following were elected members of the Committee for the ensuing year:—Mesdames de Latour, Mawson and McCormtck, and Messrs Champion, Shennan, Lovell, Burrell, Swindells and. Joblin. The same committee was elected to be a Technical School Committee.
After a vote of thanks to the retiring Committee had been adopted, the meeting closed.
(The report of the Committee on the past year's operations will appear tomorrow.)
