A narrow escape from a serious accident occurred at , the Taihape Station last night. Just as the train was / moving off an elderly gentleman rushed out and tried to board the train, but failing to get to the front of the carriage he took the' rear end, which happened to be the ladies’ compartment. He got the hand rail all right, but as the step on this~particular carriage was absent, he fell between the train and the platform, being carried in this dangerous position some distance before the train could be pulled up_ But for the prompt action of Mr. Mercer, the stationmastcr, ho stopping the train, there would have been a fatal accident to record instead of only a few minor bruises. The incident created a little alarm among the spectators.
