TAIHAPE GOLF CLUB.
1 iis annual general meeting of the nou Club was Lmd last night, when there was an attendance of aooui mU, presicea over by Idr, D. N eagle.
The annual report and balance j sheet was submitted. The report. stated that the season 1917-7*3 was the most successful one in the history of the Club, both from the point of view of membership and enthusiasm. Membership.—No less than 27 ladies and 46 men paid their subscriptions during th e year and so the j Club’s financial position is quite satis- | factory. The Bank overdraft stands at £2l 3s 7d, and the assets exceen the liabilities by £TO 16s lid. The ap- ' proximate profit for the year was £SO Competitions.— Many competitions were held during the year, and owing to the generosity of many of the mem- | hers in providing trophies the Club i made a profit of £l3 7s out of them. 1 Ail the competitions were keenly contested and the chief results were: Ladies’ Championship, Club trophy, —Miss Spooner. , Senior Championship, Wakeman’s Trophy—J. Evans (sixth time). Junior Championship, President’s Cup—H. O’Callaghan. Mrs. O’Callaghan’s Vase—Mr. Neagle. Sherlaw Bracelet—Mrs. H. 'A. O’Callaghan. Bond Cup—Mrs. H. A. O’Callaghan. Shergold Senior Cup and A. M. Ryan’s Medal—W. V. Kelsall. Shergold Junior Cup—H. A. O’Callaghan. Mortland Rose Bowl—R. Andrews and H. Hesketh. Bray Trophy—W. V. Kelsall (2), A. D. N. Train, R. Andrews, J. A. Champion. D. A. Mitchel’s Trophy—ll. F. Blackie. P. J. Hintz’s Trophy—P. E. Wakeman. H.'Hesketh’s Trophy—C. O. Gibbs. S. Behan’s Trophy—T. Bradley. J. Red Cross fehop.—During the season your committee was approached by the officials of the' local Red Ca-oss Society to take charge of the Shop for one day. They unanimously decided to do so and by a combined .effort of the members succeeded in raising the satisfactory sum of £ 212, 9s 9d.
, Ball-branding Machine.—The ball- ; branding machine again . proved a! boon to the players, keeping down the ! expense of the game, and it is hoped this year to drain part .of the links' in order that less balls may be lost than in any previous season.’.! In conclusion your committee begs to report that the links”are in better order than they have previously been for the time of the year, and {rusts that all records will be beaten during the ensuing season. In speaking to the report and balance sheet, Mr. S. Beban said a great deal of the credit for such a satisfactory state of affairs was due to the ef. | forts of the secretary, and the appreciation of his efforts should be placed on record by the Club. The chairman (Mr. Neagle), said the condition of the Club as disclosed was eminently satisfactory, and was due in a very large measure to the efforts of their secretary, particularly the splendid showing made by the Red Cross efforts. In reference to the competitions he was pleased that some of the younger members had succeeded in annexing some prizes. Mr. Bray considered it was a very creditable report, and all agreed that the pwSt season had been a successful one. With regard to the Red Cress function he thought very great credit was due to the “bottle’o” boys. The report and balance sheet was then adopted amidst applause. The , following new members were elected; —Messrs F. Yarnam, Howens, O. Dunkley, A. B. Young, J. McKenzie, >G. Beeton, E. Bougen, H. Evans, P. Carroll, B. Clarke, and.oW.n Bremner (country member). ' The election of officers resulted ras follows:—Patron, R. W. Smith, M.Pi; President, Mr. J. Champion; vice-pre-sidents, Messrs S. Fhwell and H. Hesketh; Captain, W. V. Kelsall; secretary and treasurer, Mr. P. E. Wake, man. Mr. Champion, on taking the chair, thanked the members most sincerely for electing him president. With the new members who had joined that evening the Club should have another very successful year. If he, as president, could do as well as their late president ,he Would be quite satisfied. Mr. Neagle said possibly he had been brought more into contact with Mr. Wakeman as secretary than most members, and he considered the Club fortunate in getting him to carry out ’Wa' duties fer another year.
Mr. Dymock made a humorous speech with reference to his duties as auditor. There was no doubt the'Most creditable condition of the Club was. due to the efforts of the secretary. Mr. Wakeman thanked the members for the honour of re-electing him.. He was pleased that' everything was. going on so satisfactorily, (Applause). The following committee was elected:—Messrs Neagle, Bray, Behan, Ewans and Mortland. The official opening of the season was fixed for Thursday, May 2nd, The Girls’ Hockey Club sent in a challenge to the Golf Club to play a hockey match on May 2nd, the latter’s team to play ,in skirts, the proceeds to *be devoted to patriotic purposes. It was decided to take up the challenge, with a suggestion that the elderly members of the Club should be chosen to don the skirts. It was decided that the telephone charges to the links should be a charge on the funds of the Club. It was decided, after some discussion, that the holding of a social function at the end of the season should be a recommendation to the Committee. A vote of thanks to the chair brought the meeting to a close.
