PLACING WAR LOAN BONDS.
In an opon air speech delivered in Wellington, on Tuesday, Sir Joseph Ward in support of the War Loan said he had to emphasise the fact that without money the soldiers in France could not be supported. Nor could the soldiers who were yet to go ge efficiently trained without money. He had received a letter from an officer at the front, Captain Thomas Seddon, indicating what the soldiers were doing in the direction of giving money as well as lives. Sir Joseph read the letter, which 'indicated that a competition was recently held at the front and was won by members of No. 2 Company, N.Z.A.S.C., who averaged £l9 12s 8d per head. C. Company, N.Z, Pioneers, was second, and D Company, N.Z, Poaneers, third. The total amount raised among New Zealand soldeirs on active service was £12,774 2s, which would bo supplemented by money received under the coupon system. All the money would be sent to the New Zealand loan. This was the idea of General Eussell, The- letter added that the manner in which soldiers had subscribed should be heeded by those who were diffident about lending their gold. Sir Joseph concluded by pleading for subscriptions to the loan—small as well as large amounts. Following an address by Mr. F, W. Manton, the sale of certificates was commenced in earnest.
