WHAT FOCH STANDS TOR.
The assurance of Generalissimo Foch that all is well on the western front is better than all Fne imaginings of all the war correspondents. The whole cause of the uneasy feeling engendered by the pushing back of the Allies in the second thr»st of the Kaiser's battle is that Amiens is the junction of a great and important French railway system. That the Allies will rise to the occasion in defence of thai- system goes without saying. They will bend without breaking, for in .the bending the prime object of our policy is achieved —the destruction of Germans. We need great patience day by day in reading the details of these bending tactics. But behind this strategy are the genius of Foch, the alertness of Petain, the doggedness of Haig: It has been said of Foch that clearness of vision, dash, and a gift for grasping the main point, are all characteristic of this great French soldier. To these qualities are to be added that resourcefulness and imagination which have but too often failed the Allide commanders, and without which victory is impossible. Those of our readers who have a tendency to feel down-hearted in the present crisis should remember the Marne. The" Alies won then —the odds against them can never be so great again.
